Thirst Quencher

“Christ is not a reservoir but a spring. His life is continual, active and ever passing on with an outflow as necessary as its inflow. If we do not perpetually draw the fresh supply from the living Fountain, we shall either grow stagnant or empty. It is, therefore, not so much a perpetual fullness as a perpetual filling.” - A.B. Simpson

One of the concerns I had while traveling the world, visiting camps, and attending conferences was drinking water. Never wanting to offend but always wary of picking up an unwanted bug, I often passed on the beverages with, “No thanks, I’m not thirsty.”

But I was thirsty. I wanted a drink, and sometimes I would risk the consequences to enjoy a refreshing glass of water.

Jesus understood thirst. On a hot afternoon, He needed water and asked a Samaritan woman for a drink. In the conversation that followed, Jesus demonstrated to the woman that the ‘polluted water’ she had been drinking to assuage her thirsty soul would never truly satisfy. Jesus told her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.” (John 4:13) The thirst of her empty soul would always return.

Fortunately, Jesus went on, “but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14)

Avoid this world’s polluted water that promises to satisfy but leaves our souls parched. Enjoy the water of life that springs from the well found only in Jesus.
