The [Christian] message is that there is hope for a ruined humanity – hope of pardon, hope of peace with God, hope of glory – because at the Father’s will Jesus became poor, and was born in a stable so that thirty years later He might hang on a cross. - J.I. Packer
PREVIEW – This December I will walk through five Christmas related passages – but none from the familiar Gospel accounts. Today we will look at Genesis, next week Exodus, then Ruth, Haggai, and end the month in 1 Timothy. Enjoy a look at Christmas from some non-traditional passages.
Despair must have engulfed Adam and Eve as they said goodbye to their garden home and glanced back at the mess they had made of their lives. Their warm, open fellowship with God had been broken. Strife and conflict had entered their once perfect relationship. And life’s purpose became muddled and elusive.
God’s judgement upon the serpent, Satan, included this cryptic message. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heal. (Genesis 3:15)
Generation after generation would suffer the consequences of Adam and Eve’s decision; our personal sinful choices would also result in destructive outcomes in our lives. But even God’s curse contained a glimmer of hope. An offspring of Eve would someday defeat Satan. When God placed His divine foot upon Earth, He would crush the head of the Serpent.
But not without a price. When Christ stepped into time and onto Earth He would be wounded deeply as He suffered death’s poison intended for us.
This Christmas, remember the greatest Gift ever given. The Heel that stepped into this world crushed the head of Satan so that we may enjoy a Merry Christmas.
Excelsior,
