It’s one thing to be grateful. It’s another to give thanks. Gratitude is what you feel. Thanksgiving is what you do. - Tim Keller
Thanksgiving, in the United States, is celebrated this Thursday. This holiday is a day set aside to express our gratitude and appreciation for God’s many blessings.
A 2021, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) study found several physical benefits flowing from a life filled with gratitude: diminished stress, higher satisfaction, better sleep, healthier hearts, lower blood pressure, and less depression. Feeling gratitude is not the only factor, there appears to be a positive relationship between demonstrating thanks and a better life.
The study offered a simple yet significant suggestion – express your gratitude. It is good to feel thankful, but the benefits multiply when we write a note, make a call, send an email, or tell someone how much we appreciate them.
Our expressions of gratitude and thanks must ultimately be directed toward God. David experienced God’s mercy and forgiveness in dramatic ways. In response, he said, “I . . . go around your altar O Lord, proclaiming thanksgiving aloud, and telling all your wondrous deeds.” (Psalm 26:6-7)
This Thanksgiving, express your gratitude to others, but remember to thank God as well. Enjoy a triple blessing, honor God, encourage the people around you, and enjoy the benefits that come from a grateful heart.
