Trust and Obey

Nº 198

weekly devotions to refresh your soul by Dr. Dan Bolin - May 17, 2022

God is God. Because he is God, He is worthy of my trust and obedience. I will find rest nowhere but in His holy will that is unspeakably beyond my largest notions of what he is up to. - Elisabeth Elliot

In C.S. Lewis’ book, The Silver Chair, Pole, a central character, received four instructions from Aslan, the Christ-figure. By following these directives, they would discover and liberate the lost prince of Narnia. Because of distractions, fear, and peer pressure, they failed to follow the first three commands. Yet their adventure was never thwarted. It just became more difficult and complicated.

The fourth and final command appeared dangerous and illogical. The trio was afraid and skeptical: “Oh, what are we to do?” bemoaned Pole.

After more rationalizing and debate, she sighed, “Oh if only we knew!’”

Puddleglum, another companion, reflected: “I think we do know. . . You see, Aslan didn’t tell Pole what would happen. He only told her what to do.’”

Spoiler alert - they obeyed the fourth command and their adventure concluded successfully!

Paul reminds us,In all things, God works for the good of those who love him.” (Romans 8:28a) God’s love is greater than our disobedience. Our doubts and fears cannot overpower His sovereign plan. He loves us enough to give us what we need rather than what we want.

Overcome your doubts. Trust and obey. And remember, obedience travels the smoother pathway.
