Love That Will Never Burn Out

“Though our feelings come and go, God’s love for us does not.”

-C.S. Lewis

Strains of Happy Birthday filled the room, wrapping paper covered the floor, and a cake with candles aflame was placed in front of the birthday boy. He made a wish and then with one strong breath, blew out all the candles!

The happy crowd cheered and anticipated a piece of the delicious cake. But before the first slice was cut, the candles sprang back to life. Reigniting candles were used so that no matter how many times the birthday boy blew them out, they would always burn again.

Isaiah’s prophecy of old reveals the faithful heart of our compassionate God. “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed, says the LORD.” (Isaiah 54:10)

Our mountains of medical, financial, or relational traumas may shake us. Our sinful choices, rebellious acts, and obsessive independence may fool us into thinking God’s love for us has gone out. But like the candles that flicker and reignite, God’s love for us will never be extinguished. His love is greater than any problem, inside or out, that would try to quench it.
