Dress the Part

“God has given us our identity in order that his identity might be proclaimed through us. God made us who we are so we could make known who he is. Our identity is for the sake of making known his identity. The meaning of our identity is that the excellency of God be seen in us.” - John Piper

School groups visit Washington DC incessantly! Young people from throughout the United States and around the world visit the monuments, explore the museums, and relive significant historical events.

And each group wears matching T-shirts.

These T-shirts serve one fundamental purpose; they identify each student with the group. That identifying T-shirt reminds the one wearing it of his or her responsibility to act properly, since they represent their school. And that shared identity keeps everyone together, the matching color helps unify and focus the many members.

Paul knew that what we ‘wear’ matters. What we ‘put on’ influences our personal behavior and corporate unity. He told the Colossians, put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity (Colossians 3:14).

Our identity should overflow with love; love should be the core value of who we are. And love should unify us as Christians; it should keep us together and focused, headed in the same direction. After all, Jesus said, By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another (John 13:35).

Wear the group T-shirt! Each day remember to put on love, demonstrating your identity as a follower of Christ and our unity in Him.
