“A man's real belief is that which he lives by. What a man believes is the thing he does, not the thing he thinks.” George MacDonald

I was enthralled by a passionate and enthusiastic farmer who described his style of farming to a few of us who visited his bucolic acreage in rural Virginia. He explained every activity and the rationale behind each decision. He was all in! When it came time for questions, I had little to contribute. I don’t know anything about farming, and I had no way of knowing if his methods were valid or not. My question was rather simple: Did you grow up on a farm? He explained that both his grandfather and father had been farmers, but he was quick to point out that his methods differed greatly from his forefathers. What intrigued and inspired me was that he believed in his system enough to change his behavior. His belief was more than mental ascent, it transformed every aspect of his life. James said a lot about true faith and changed behavior. He said, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22) Attending church or reading one more Christian book is not a bad idea, just ineffective unless we apply what we learn and live more like Christ.
