ALONG FOR THE RIDE

“Do not strive in your own strength; cast yourself at the feet of the Lord Jesus, and wait upon Him in the sure confidence that He is with you, and works in you. Strive in prayer; let faith fill your heart-so will you be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.” ~ Andrew Murray, Pastor

We received a text: Pray for our daughter, she is jumping today! Our friend’s teenage daughter competes in equestrian games. Sitting atop a jumping horse is graceful and beautiful but also difficult and dangerous. We prayed!

The text, however, struck me a little odd: she is jumping today. Our young friend was not actually jumping; she was saddled to a horse that was jumping. Her part took skill and training, but she was just along for the ride!

We need to ride well. We need to do our part and do it with skill and grace. But we must remember that the power and strength that allows us to soar above life’s challenges and that carries us over life’s obstacles is God alone.

God reminded Isaiah, “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” (Isaiah 46:4)

Isaiah was a great prophet. He wrote faithfully, engaged world rulers, displayed courage, shared wisdom, and demonstrated strength. But in the end, he “rode” well. Isaiah depended on God to carry him over the obstacles of life.
