Wash Your Hands

Nº 379

Prudence must be exercised in (discipline), lest we do more hurt than good…we should deal humbly even when we deal sharply. - Richard Baxter

After years of education, training, and preparation, surgeons do two things: first, they wash their hands before entering the operating room, and second, they wash their hands when they depart. Doctors are diligent to ensure that they are clean when they address a dangerous case and clean when they leave a messy situation.

This healthy practice from the medical world can apply to the spiritual world as well.

If a friend demonstrates dangerous behaviors or unhealthy attitudes, we should not sit by waiting for the worst-case scenario to play itself out. But what to do? Paul’s advice is simple and direct; “If anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual, should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.” (Galatians 6:1)

Paul expects that those addressing spiritual problems should be spiritual – mature Christians who are in a right relationship with God. They should confront serious situations with clean hands.

But after the messy, hazardous issue has been resolved, Paul’s recommendation is clear – wash your hands! Take every precaution to keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.

Helping others is both necessary and risky. Be compassionate and be cautious.
