Hearts on earth may say in the course of a joyful experience, “I don’t want this ever to end.” But invariably it does. The hearts of those in heaven say, “I want this to go on forever.” And it will. There is no better news than this.” - J.I. Packer
Last week I attended the memorial service for a long-time friend. His love for the Lord overflowed into the lives of all of us who were blessed to know him.
During the service - that resembled a celebration - I recalled wonderful times we enjoyed together: a big-league baseball game, fly fishing in the Rocky Mountains, training conferences, unhurried conversations, delicious meals, and a delightful drive with our wives to explore a ‘too-good-to-be-true’ real estate opportunity in Tin Cup, Colorado. We wisely declined.
His family and friends told story after story about how his wisdom and encouragement had made an impact on their lives. He was not a perfect man, but he lived life well and left his mark on many of us.
Throughout the service, meal, and celebration, I recalled the psalmist’s words, Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. (Psalm 116:15)
Pain and funerals will always be joined. The loss of a loved one is never easy. Death is an enemy we fight. But when a believer steps into the presence of Jesus, it is also a time of celebration and recommitment to hear the words, well done, good and faithful servant. (Matthew 25:21, 23)
