What Time Is It?

Words which do not give the light of Christ increase the darkness. - Mother Teresa
Nº 422
When harsh, discouraging, or unkind words were exchanged, a friend of mine would ask those involved, “What time is it?” The only appropriate response was 4:29.
Why ask for the time? And why respond with 4:29?
Asking for the time merely garnered everyone’s attention. The response of “4:29” refocused their attention to Ephesians 4:29, a powerful verse that helped those involved take a deep breath and remember the bigger picture and their deeper commitments.
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, so that it may benefit those who listen. (Ephesians 4:29)
In a world filled with angry, discouraging, and hurtful rhetoric, a 4:29 reminder is a breath of fresh air. The verse not only tells us what not to do, it also instructs us to look for opportunities to speak soothing, encouraging, and beneficial words into the lives of those we encounter.
Any time of day can be 4:29. Look for people who could use an uplifting word or an affirming comment. And when sharp words come your way, pray for wisdom and courage to respond with a 4:29 heart.
