The highest form of worship is the worship of unselfish Christian service. - Billy Graham
The unemployment rate impacts our economy. This rate essentially measures how many people are out of work but wish they had a job. In general, having more people employed improves the economy.
Besides those seeking employment, there are always some who are classified as ‘out of the workforce.’ These people are unemployed but not seeking work. There are legitimate reasons; some of us are retired, others are students, and some are primary caregivers for children or parents. But many are discouraged, uncommitted, and sitting on the sidelines.
The ‘ministry unemployment rate’ impacts our churches as well. Too many attenders are comfortable sitting in the ‘unemployment’ pew. They attend and receive the benefits, but don’t engage in the work of the ministry.
Peter said, “...each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10)
“But I can’t preach!” you exclaim. That may be true, but there are chairs to arrange, cookies to bake, floors to vacuum, and babies to rock.
There are legitimate reasons to be ‘out of the work force,’ but if you are an able-bodied member of a Christ-centered church, find a place to serve and lower your church’s unemployment rate.
