Speak Up

Nº 416

Evangelism is not a professional job for a few trained men, but is instead the unrelenting responsibility of every person who belongs to the company of Jesus. - D. Elton Trueblood

The story of the Tower of Babel describes humans congregating to build a massive tower to reach the heavens. (Genesis 11) Earlier, God directed Noah and his family to be fruitful and fill the earth. (Genesis 9:1) The survivors of the flood had multiplied but had not filled the whole earth. To disperse the people, God scrambled their language. People clustered with those who shared their language and migrated around the world.

Thousands of years later, on Pentecost, God returned to the issue of language. This time, instead of using multiple languages to drive people out of an earthly kingdom, He used multiple languages to draw people into a new spiritual kingdom. As the disciples preached, they were bewildered because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. (Acts 2:6b)

As the disciples spoke about Jesus to various language groups, about 3,000 people responded. The instrument that God used to disperse people throughout the earth is the same tool He used to draw them to Himself.

Use your language skills to go into all the world and proclaim the gospel. (Mark 16:15) Overcome the tendency to stay huddled in Babel. Speak up and share the good news with those who need it.
