Our Lord Jesus is ever giving and does not for a solitary instant withdraw His hand. As long as there is a vessel of grace not yet full to the brim the oil shall not be stayed. He is a sun ever-shining; He is manna always falling round the camp; He is a rock in the desert ever sending out streams of life from His smitten side; the rain of His grace is always dropping; the river of His bounty is ever-flowing and the well-spring of His love is constantly overflowing. - C.H. Spurgeon
Ezekiel 47 is one of the most cryptic, wonderful, and hopeful passages in the Bible. The story begins several chapters earlier with an angelic being providing Ezekiel with a tour of a new Temple that will someday become reality.
Ezekiel describes a trickle of water spilling out from under the threshold of the Eastern gate. As it flows downstream the trickle grows knee-deep, waist-deep, and eventually becomes a torrential and impassable river. This is the river of redemption, reconciliation, and restoration that has only one source – the throne room of God.
The joyful reality is that wherever the river flows it brings transformation. Dry land becomes lush, brackish water becomes fresh, fruit trees grow, fish abound, and all that was dead comes to life.
The picture of the river flowing form the Temple finds full bloom when Jesus, standing outside the Temple of His day cries out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.” (John 7:37).
When we are parched and dry...when our souls are brackish and bitter....when scarcity seems our lot in life, Jesus offers redemption, refreshment, restoration, and hope. All that we need flows from Him, and He offers us an abundance of all we truly need.
