Give yourself to prayer, to reading and meditation on divine truths: strive to penetrate to the bottom of them and never be content with a superficial knowledge. - David Brainerd
Mark records two interesting conversations as Jesus made His way toward Jerusalem and the events of Passion Week.
The first began with James and John making a childish and self-serving request. We want you to do for us whatever we ask.(Mark 10:35) Jesus replied, What do you want me to do for you? (Mark 10:36) James and John then asked Jesus for seats next to him in the kingdom they expected Him to establish in the days ahead. Jesus admonished them, and when the other disciples heard about it, they became indignant. What a mess!
As Jesus entered Jericho, Bartimaeus, a blind man, screamed obnoxiously to get Jesus’ attention. Jesus stopped and asked the same pointed question, What do you want me to do for you? (Mark 10:51a) Bartimaeus responded, Rabbi, I want to see. (Mark 10:51b) Go, said Jesus, your faith has healed you. (Mark 10:52)
Jesus’ pointed question continues to assess the validity of our requests today. We can ask with selfish motives, or we can bring Him our legitimate needs. In His own way and in His own time He will respond to us as He did James and John and Bartimaeus, always providing what is best.
