The more reverence we have for the Word of God, the more joy we shall find in it. - Matthew Henry
Few people have enjoyed as much success as Ezra. He was a strong leader who organized a major return of Jewish exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem. Almost 50,000 people joined his journey home. The caravan was supported by more than 8,000 horses, mules, camels, and donkeys.
After a five-month pilgrimage, Ezra led the effort to rebuild the temple. The work was challenging, and the opposition was significant, yet he persevered and saw the new temple built and dedicated. It became the center of worship for the returning children of Israel.
Throughout the work and challenges, God blessed him in amazing ways. “For the gracious hand of the Lord was upon him.” (Ezra 7:9)
Beyond his many accomplishments, three fundamental characteristics stood out. His life was described in one simple verse. “For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.” (Ezra 7:10).
Whatever accomplishments may dot our resumes, our relationship to God and His Word should take priority. The three basics of Ezra’s life should be the commitments of ours: studying the Word of God, obeying the Word of God, and sharing the Word of God with others.
