Never Alone

Nº 410

God hath in Himself all power to defend you, all wisdom to direct you, all mercy to pardon you, all grace to enrich you, all righteousness to clothe you, all goodness to supply you, and all happiness to crown you. - Thomas Brooks

Gideon’s life was a mess. Powerful nations had sent marauders into Israel to steal their crops and livestock. These raids came year after year. To escape the enemy’s eyes, Gideon resorted to using a winepress - a small sunken hideout - to process his meager wheat harvest.

Threatened and alone yet working hard to provide for his family, Gideon was confronted by a celestial messenger. The angel of the Lord made a stunning two-part announcement, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” (Judges 6:12b)

Gideon’s reaction must have been, who are you talking to? Gideon felt alone and threatened. His perception of being abandoned and vulnerable did not match God’s reality. The angel provided Gideon with a much different picture of himself and his circumstances.

First, even in his troubling circumstances, Gideon was not alone – God was with him. And second, even in his vulnerable situation, God could use him to do mighty things.

Too often, threats, attacks, and past failures leave us feeling alone and weak. Like Gideon, we need reminding that God is with us, even in the hard times, and that He provides the strength we need to face life’s threats as mighty warriors.
