Recipe for Success(ion)

Nº 409

So if you turn one to Christ, that one may turn a hundred; they may turn a thousand, and so the stream, small at first, goes on broadening and deepening as it rolls toward eternity. - Dwight L. Moody

My wife makes great zucchini bread. She got the receipt from my mother. My mother got the receipt from my grandmother. And who knows where she got it. I’m just glad each generation saw the value of passing along this important bit of information. If any generation had failed to share it with the next, I would have missed out on this delicious and nutritious treat.

Psalm 78 explains our responsibility to teach future generations. More than recipes, those following us need the amazing stories and wonderful truths we have learned about God.

Asaph explains the importance of each generation handing off their spiritual awareness to the next. He wrote, he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. (Psalm 78:5b-6)

Our children and grandchildren should hear Bible stories and learn how God has worked in our lives. But the circle of influence should be much wider. Neighbors, friends, and co-workers all need to hear the good news. Asaph shares the outcome: Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands. (Psalm 78:7)
