May we think of freedom, not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to do what is right. - Peter Marshall
This week the United States celebrates its 250th birthday. Bands will play, speeches will be delivered, parades will amble through the streets, and fireworks will light the night sky. It will be a grand party!
Much of the fanfare will focus on the freedom we enjoy as citizens of the United States. Two thousand years ago, Peter reflected on the issue of freedom and commanded his reader to, “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil.” (1 Peter 2:16)
The freedom we enjoy in Christ is freedom from the penalty of sin and the freedom to follow Him. Peter goes on and says, “but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.” (1 Peter 2:16b-17)
Our freedom in Christ is freedom to serve and fear God and to love and honor others. It does not provide license for debauchery, anger, or rebellion against God.
The quote erroneously attributed to Alexander de Toqueville, but repeated by numerous presidents, both Democrat and Republican, applies today more than ever: "America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great."
