If you have not chosen the Kingdom of God first, it will in the end make no difference what you have chosen instead. - William Law
I am rereading Prince Caspian, the second of C.S. Lewis’ Chronicle of Narnia series. Besides being a delightful story, the tale explores some deep and significant spiritual truths.
At one point Lucy, the youngest of the four siblings, sees Aslan, the great lion and Christ figure in the story. He beckons her to follow him. She wakes her brothers, sister, and a dwarf friend and explains Aslan’s call. The others don’t believe Lucy’s claim and determine to go another direction. Though distraught, Lucy follows the group.
Later, after a disastrous trek in the wrong direction, Lucy has a second encounter with Aslan. She realizes her mistake and explains to Aslan, “I couldn’t have left the others and come up to you alone, how could I? . . . I suppose I could. Yes, and it wouldn’t have been alone.”
Setting aside her fear of rejection and isolation, Lucy determined to follow Aslan with or without the others. Spoiler Alert - fortunately for Lucy, her family, and friend (and us), God is a God of second chances.
Jesus called rich young rulers, tax collectors, fishermen, and us today to follow him. Every day we must respond to Jesus’ simple and direct call, “Follow me.” (Mark 1:17)
