I know of nothing which I would choose to have as the subject of my ambition for life than to be kept faithful to my God till death, still to be a soul winner, still to be a true herald of the cross, and testify the name of Jesus to the last hour. - Charles Spurgeon
Today, we wrap up this year’s version of the Refueling in Flight Men’s Fishing Adventure. Over 30 men have been fishing the White River in Arkansas. This year’s topic was Finishing Strong.
We looked at the lives of King Saul in the Old Testament and the Apostle Paul (or Saul) in the New Testament. Both were from the tribe of Benjamin and enjoyed privileged family backgrounds. Each carried unusual physical traits, King Saul's extreme height, and the Apostle Paul's thorn in the flesh. And both encountered God in dramatic ways when called to their unique roles.
But the similarities end there. King Saul became fearful, angry, and self-centered. The Apostle Paul proved courageous, loving, and Christ-centered.
Near the end of their lives, they each had a reflective moment. King Saul said, “Surely I have acted like a fool and erred greatly.” (1 Samuel 26:21b). Paul, however, reflected much differently. He said, “The time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:6b-7)
Finish strong. Avoid the failings of King Saul. Like Paul, fight the good fight to the end. Run the race through the finish line. And all the way, keep the faith.
