Under the Circumstances

On earth, the underside of the tapestry (is) tangled and unclear; but in heaven, we will stand amazed to see the topside of the tapestry and how God beautifully embroidered each circumstance into a pattern for our good and His glory. - Joni Eareckson Tada

Some writers long to sequester themselves in mountain hamlets or seaside villages to avoid distractions, view the magnificent scenery, and gain inspiration from the tranquil setting. But not all great writers enjoy those benefits.

The Apostle Paul was in prison. His confinement may have been more like a house arrest than a dungeon, but it remained restrictive and uncomfortable. Not the idyllic circumstances some writers prefer.

From his incarceration he wrote, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious for anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:4-7)

Instead of complaining about his circumstances, Paul determined to do seven things: rejoice in the Lord, be gentle, avoid anxiety, be thankful, pray, enjoy God’s peace, and focus on Christ.

You are probably not in prison, but your circumstances may be controlling your heart and mind. Don’t wait for your circumstance to change; like Paul, focus on the gifts God provides and enjoy a change of heart.
