The son of God became a man so that the sons of men might become the sons of God. - Martin Luther

In Revelation we read an amazing story of a holy city descending from heaven. “I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.” (Revelation 21:2)

In Genesis we read of another city that tried to build its way up to God. “Then they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches up to heaven.'” (Genesis 11:4)

These two cities summarize the story of Scripture and the contrast between human effort and God’s grace.

God’s plan was never for us to be good enough to work our way to Him. He is not sitting atop a mountain watching us strive upward along any number of pathways. We could never be good enough, or work hard enough, to come into his presence.

He proactively sent His one and only Son to provide the one and only pathway to Him. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

We could never work our way up to Him. Thank God, He came down to us.

Excelsior,
