Lights Out

Nº 365

JuLY 29, 2025

There is no peace like the peace of those whose minds are possessed with full assurance that they have known God, and God has known them, and that this relationship guarantees God’s favor to them in life, through death and on forever. - J.I. Packer

Today I turn 73! Oddly, 73 years before my birth, Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in 1879!

Edison’s light bulb transformed the way people around the world live. The light bulb has also created an epidemic of light pollution that hinders people from viewing the majesty of God’s stellar creation.

David penned this stunning reminder, “The heavens declare the Glory of God.” (Psalm 19:1) Imagine Satan’s frustration for thousands of years as the last things people saw before putting their heads on their pillows, was the dazzling star-filled sky. The message was clear, there is a glorious, powerful, awesome God. I’m sure Satan hoped to stop or limit that powerful display, and light pollution has proved effective.

Fortunately, the psalm goes on. Verse 7 begins, “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.” (Psalm 19:7) We can know things about God through His creation, but we can know God only through His Son, revealed in Scripture.

God’s self-revelation through His creation and His Word provide the on-ramp to a new and deepening relationship with Him. The outcome is that, “The words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart would be acceptable in Your sight.” (Psalm 19:14)
