“All change comes from deepening your understanding of the salvation of Christ and living out the changes that understanding creates in your heart.” Tim Keller

“All change comes from deepening your understanding of the salvation of Christ and living out the changes that understanding creates in your heart.” Tim Keller

Last week I enjoyed the privilege of speaking in chapel at my alma mater, Dallas Theological Seminary. My goal was simple: help the students (and faculty) fall in love with Christian camping.

I reframed the story of the Bible, viewing it from a little different perspective:

A young man went to camp He spent time with the animals He met a pretty girl Together they tended the camp garden Each evening they enjoyed devotions in direct communication with God Then they broke the camp’s only rule and got kicked out!

The rest of the Bible is about the Camp Director paying an excruciating price to provide full scholarships for anyone who wants to come back to camp – back into a right relationship with God, back into healthy relationships with others, and back to a place of meaning and purpose.

Time away with others in creation sets the stage for God to work.

Camp does not change lives. Only God does that! But camp is the place where many join David in this prayer of transformation: "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your right, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer." (Psalm 19:14)
