“True Christians…acknowledge and live under the Word of God. They submit without reserve to the Word of God written in the Book of Truth, believing the teaching trusting the promises, following the commands. Their eyes are upon the God the Bible as their Father and the Christ of the Bible as their Savior.” J.I. Packer
A friend of ours loves to knit. She has done it for decades and is quite good. I know nothing about knitting, but I do enjoy the warm hats and mittens she has gifted us.
Recently, while she and her husband visited our home, she went to work on a pair of gloves. She read a page of instructions, pulled out yarn and needles, made her twists and turns, and the cuff of a future glove began to emerge. The conversation and laughter of the evening diminished as her hours of nonchalant work devolved into frustration.
She had followed the instructions precisely. Every knot and connection had been done exactly as the plan described. But the instructions were flawed. The plan looked good but led to futility.
The ancient proverb speaks to issues much more significant than knitting. “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” (Proverbs 14:12)
The world is filled with flawed plans. Philosophies, ideologies, creeds, and religions, all look good but only deliver to the degree that they align with the true pattern revealed in God’s Word. Jesus’ command, “Follow me” still provides the best pattern.
