“Follow boldly in your Master’s steps, for He has made this rough journey before you.” - Alistair Begg

I’m on a two week road trip with my brothers. Near Baker City, Oregon we stopped at a museum that honored the 300,000 people who traveled the Oregon Trail. One in 10 died along the way. On average there is one grave every 80 yards!

I’m immensely thankful for those who went before us, selecting the pathway, clearing the obstacles, building roads, constructing bridges, and establishing rest stops along the way. Less than 200 years ago, our three-day drive would have taken six months.

We benefit from the sacrifices of those who have gone before.

Hebrews 11 records an amazing list of heroes who traveled ahead of us, paving the way for our spiritual journey. Their work was dangerous and for some, deadly. “They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated--the world was not worthy of them.” (Hebrews 11:37b-38a)

We take much for granted and quickly forget the sacrifices of those who have gone before us. This trip has reminded me of my parents, grandparents, pastors, teachers, and a host of others who have paved the way for my journey of faith!
