Under Renovation

"By a Carpenter mankind was made, and only by that Carpenter can mankind be remade." Desiderius Erasmus

Cay and I recently visited George Washington’s magnificent home, Mount Vernon. This idyllic farm, overlooking the Potomac River, provides a glimpse into the life of the Washington family, as well as the slaves and other workers who supported the huge agricultural operation.

As our guides led us room by room through the family home, we were impressed by the intricate detail and creative design. One room near the end of our tour was cordoned off with a sign that read, “Restoration In Progress.” Workers were active replacing stained, worn, and damaged portions of the room.

Stains, wear and tear, and serious damage occur in each of our lives.

David was no stranger to a soul in need of restoration. Adultery, cover-ups, and murder had left his heart in disarray and in need of serious improvement. And God came through; He restored David’s soul.

David never lost sight of his glorious and gracious renovation. He embedded that powerful and comforting concept in the heart of Psalm 23 where he penned the words, “He restores my soul.” (Psalm 23:3a)

God’s love and mercy can clean the worst stains, renew the shabbiest elements, and fix the biggest messes of our lives.
