Traveling Light

"I have held many things in my hands, and have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess." - Martin Luther

I’m not a hoarder, but I am emotionally attached to lots of very important stuff! I might need those old socks, college history notes, basket of ornamental fruit, or grandson’s art work. Soooooo, I’m not too fond of the ‘Uncluttering Movement.’

When we moved from East Texas to the Washington D.C. area, I had to say goodbye to lots of “valuable stuff." Old tennis shoes, axes, broken binoculars, footballs, and jars of nails and screws that I might need someday. Such are the casualties of moving on.

To move forward, we had to pick and choose: what do we truly need and what should we leave behind? We only carried what was necessary for our new life in Washington D.C.

The writer of Hebrews knew the importance of letting go of the things that hold us back and moving on to what is best. “ Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1b).

Don’t hold on to things that slow you down or hold you back. Leave behind the security of trivial and comfortable distractions. Push forward with things that will last for eternity.
