Number Our Days
“When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives. Our love of the Lord will govern the claims for our affection, the demands on our time, the interests we pursue, and the order of our priorities.” - Ezra Taft Benson
This week the news anchor reminded me, “Only 10 more shopping days until Christmas!” As if I’m not stressed enough, now the TV is reminding me of how little time remains to get things done before December 25!
Scarcity is a powerful motivator and helps reveal true priorities – especially when it comes to time. As we countdown to the end of a project at work, study for final exams, or anticipate the arrival of Christmas, the closer the deadline the more we should become focused on what is important.
Numbering our days may appear to add pressure to our already frazzled lives. But it simply means we must manage our time – and ourselves – as days grow short. Instead of adding to our stress, numbering our days helps us focus our thoughts and bolster our efforts.
Sadly, during the Christmas season, our lives can be filled with distractions that take our hearts and minds away from the true reason for the holiday. A wise heart remembers the words of the angel 2,000 years ago that are still worthy of our full attention today: “I bring you good news of great joy.” (Luke 2:10)
