Apply Yourself

“What makes life worthwhile is having a big enough objective, something which catches our imagination and lays hold of our allegiance, and this the Christian has in a way that no other person has. For what higher, more exalted, and more compelling goal can there be than to know God?” J.I. Packer

I recently heard of an estate planning attorney who died without leaving a will. This expert knew the intricate details of the law and helped many people navigate the challenging process of transferring assets and keepsakes to the next generation. Yet he never applied that knowledge to his own life.

Head knowledge is never enough; the truth must also filter into our lives. James had a good deal to say about applying what we know. He wrote, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22)

In his next chapter James is even more pointed and dramatic: “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder.” (James 2:19)

Having a solid grasp of information is not bad – it is good; being an expert is even better. But having unapplied knowledge is woefully inadequate and potentially tragic.

The attorney may have thought he would get around to it later. Or perhaps he didn’t want to face his own mortality. Whatever his reason, his considerable knowledge never transformed his life. Start applying your biblical knowledge today. That may be the best gift you leave for the next generation.
